Released in 2002, Cinemania follows five individuals consumed by the desire to watch films. Seated for two to five screenings a day, these outsiders are notorious at New York’s various repertory houses and arthouse cinemas. Their commitment to their preferred art form is horrifying yet strangely admirable: such dedication requires, in the words of one of the film’s subjects, “a technically deviant lifestyle”, which the documentary captures in vivid, unsettling detail. Bleakly funny, at times touching, and perhaps uncomfortably relatable for some, Cinemania provides a fascinating exploration of obsessive behaviour and the outer limits of film devotion.
